Tumaini: A place where hope begins and futures are built.

Burundi is one of the poorest nations in the world, where many families face daily challenges like extreme poverty, limited access to education, food insecurity, and inadequate healthcare. Many children grow up without stable homes or consistent meals, and schools often lack basic resources, making it difficult for them to break the cycle of poverty without outside support.

In the heart of Bujumbura, Burundi, Tumaini—meaning “Hope”—was born from a simple desire: to care for children who had nowhere else to turn.

Today, Tumaini Children’s Home and School is a place where children are no longer alone. Here, they receive not only education, but a home, a family, and the opportunity to dream again.

"Hope" in Action.

“Tumaini” is the Swahili word for hope. For many families and for orphaned or abandoned children, this school is more than a place of learning—it is their only path to literacy, stability, and a future filled with purpose. In a place where opportunities are limited, Tumaini becomes a doorway to something greater: a chance to grow, to belong, and to dream.

“Hope” was born from a simple desire—to care for children who had nowhere else to turn. Today, that desire has grown into a loving home and a life-changing school where children are not only educated, but nourished, protected, and encouraged to become the leaders of tomorrow.

How it Came to Life

2012

Faith and Desire

A young man is driven by compassion and a calling to serve. Sylvestre Nibitanga saw the struggles many children in his community were experiencing—poverty, lack of access to education, and in some cases the absence of stable homes.

2023

partners

As the vision grew, an important partnership formed with Andrew and Emily Clark through their non-profit Equipping the Nations. With this partnership, the mission received guidance, and the support needed to help the school and children’s home grow.

2024

Growing

The vision for Tumaini—meaning “Hope”—was born. Over the years, through prayer, perseverance, and the support of others who shared the same heart, the dream continued to grow. In 2024, by the Lord’s grace, that vision came to fruition as Tumaini Children’s Home and School was built, bringing hope and opportunity to many children.

2026

New Strategic Vision

Purchasing adjoining land and building a boarding school that will allow the ministry to serve more children—especially those who live too far away to attend school regularly or who come from difficult home situations.
